pool.ntp.org

Not so long ago I took over maintenance of the NTP Pool project.

If you have a static IP and an NTP daemon running (or you can start running one), please consider adding your server to the pool. In particular if you are in Asia, South America, Australia or one of the many under-served countries in Europe (the goal is to have 30+ servers in each country).

update: Oops, I made a typo in the code last night so adding a server sometimes didn't work. If you tried and had trouble making it work, please try again and email me if it's not working. :)

Can you add "Africa" to that list :)

Jacques,

We need some servers located in Africa to join the pool; then I'll add Africa to the pool system. :-)

If you meant that I should have mentioned it in the post, yes indeed!

If you (or anyone else) have servers in Africa then I can add them so they'll not be used in the global zone in case international traffic is expensive or limited.

Hi Ask,

One of the limiting factors for us down here in South Africa is the costs of international bandwidth , so it might be better to pool per country for the various african countries as we don't have good inter country connectivity on the contintent with connectivity having to go via international for other african countries.

Might be useful to include options to include me in global pool, etc.?

Jacques, the default is to put the new servers in the global pool (as you know), but I can change it manually after the server is added.

There's no option for it on the website (other than the "email me" option) because I want it to be the exception rather than the rule. The vast majority of users are just using 0.pool.ntp.org, 1.pool.ntp.org etc.

At some point in the future I'll set it up so you get a pool server in your country when available when you ask for the default name.
