Ah, they made the code for the site public (oh boy, my eyes my eyes!!) and their "search" is just taking everything in a zip code numerically close to you. Doesn't exactly work great in Los Angeles (we live in 90068, so their search wouldn't include birds in 90028 if someone entered that).
